01/20/2007 - Raleigh, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 14th-ranked Duke Blue Devils make the short trip to Raleigh this afternoon, for an ACC showdown with the North Carolina State Wolfpack from the RBC Center.
The Blue Devils dropped their first two conference games of the year to Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech, but have quickly evened their league mark with back-to-back wins over Miami-Florida (85-63) and most recently, Wake Forest (62-40).
NC State is in a similar position, as the Wolfpack failed to post a win in their first three ACC tilts. However, NC State finally got in the win column last time out, winning at Wake Forest last weekend, 88-74.
Duke leads the all-time series with NC State, 131-95, and has won eight of the last 10 road games against the Wolfpack.
Duke was ultra-impressive in the win over Wake Forest a couple of days ago, as the team held the Demon Deacons to a season-low 40 points, tying for the third-fewest points allowed by Duke in an ACC affair. Offensively, Duke was led by Greg Paulus, who netted 17 points. Josh McRoberts was the only other Blue Devil to finish in double digits, tallying 11 points, while completing a solid stat line with eight rebounds and six assists. It has been that kind of defensive effort which has fueled Duke's success thus far. The team has not been able to rely on gaudy offensive numbers this year, instead concentrating on shutting the opposition down at the defensive end. The team is averaging just 69.0 ppg this season, but is still enjoying a +14.8 scoring margin, holding foes to a meager 55.2 ppg. Opponents are being held under 40 percent shooting overall (390) and under 30 percent from behind the arc (.271). DeMarcus Nelson leads the team in scoring at 14.4 ppg. He is followed by McRoberts and Jon Scheyer, who add 12.6 and 11.7 ppg, respectively.
NC State turned the ball over a whopping 19 times last weekend at Wake Forest, but it didn't matter, because the Wolfpack shot .607 from the floor in the game, including a sizzling .682 in second half to hold off the Demon Deacons. All five starters finished in double figures, led by Gavin Grant's 24 points. Courtney Fells poured in 20 points, while converting four three-pointers, followed by Brandon Costner's 17 points. Ben McCauley (13 pts) and Dennis Horner (12 pts) got in the act as well. Scoring depth has been a constant for NC State this season, with the team delivering on just over 50 percent of its shots. Four players are currently averaging double figures, led by Costner and McCauley, who are tied for the team-lead at 16.6 ppg each. Both enjoy rebounding as well, with Costner leading the team at 7.8 rpg and McCauley ranking second at 6.6 rpg. Grant can also fill up the basket with 16.1 ppg, followed by Fells' 11.6 ppg.

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
