01/20/2007 - Indianapolis, IN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 18th-ranked Butler Bulldogs are the class of the Horizon League, and they will attempt to avoid an upset when they host the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix in Indianapolis today.
UW-Green Bay had a modest two-game win streak halted last Saturday with a 78-67 loss to Wright State. The Phoenix are now 2-7 in true road games and 2-3 in HL action, so it is understandable that they enter this afternoon's clash as a decided underdog.
Victories in two straight games and six of the last seven have enabled Butler to move to 16-2 overall and 4-1 in league action. The Bulldogs have held four of their last five opponents to 50 or fewer points, including a stellar defensive effort in Wednesday's 67-39 romp over Youngstown State that enabled the squad to improve to 8-0 at home.
Butler holds a 21-13 edge in the all-time series with Wisconsin-Green Bay, including four straight wins over the Phoenix.
Wisconsin-Green Bay has had a week to prepare for today's contest, as it hasn't played since last weekend's 11-point road loss to Wright State. The Phoenix suffered a 38-25 rebounding disadvantage in that clash and were outscored by six points from the foul line. Ryan Evanochko did all he could to keep Green Bay in the game, as he scored 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Terry Evans and Mike Schachtner posted 10 points apiece for the Phoenix, who are averaging 68.4 ppg while allowing 66.3 ppg to the opposition. Evanochko is the top offensive performer through 18 outings, as he is scoring 15.2 ppg to go along with 95 assists. On a down note, he is shooting just 38.3 percent from the field. Schachtner checks in with 13.8 ppg on the strength of his 49.1 percent efficiency from three- point range.
Butler was tremendous at the defensive end against Youngstown State, limiting the Penguins to 39 points on 31 percent shooting from the floor. The Bulldogs finished the game with only eight turnovers, and their 14-of-24 shooting from three-point range played a major role in the blowout. Pete Campbell was impressive with 17 points off the bench, and Mike Green posted 16 points and 10 rebounds. The third and final double-digit scorer for Butler was Brandon Crone with 10 points. The Bulldogs are averaging 67.5 ppg while limiting opponents to 55.4 ppg on 39.7 percent efficiency from the field. A glaring negative for the squad is that it has committed 87 more turnovers than its opponents through 18 games. A.J. Graves was quiet against YSU, but he continues to lead Butler with 18.1 ppg on the strength of his 98.8 percent accuracy from the foul line. Green checks in with 13.7 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 75 assists, as he is the club's most versatile performer.
